Our intrepid team has been in Freetown for almost one week, and they've already made an impression! An article on the Freetown, Sierra Leone news web site "Awoko" reports that Brian, Geoff and Mike's appeared at several locations in Freetown, presenting astronomy lectures. The article slightly mis-represents the team as all being astronomers. As we know, Brian is the only true astronomer on the team. It also reports that the team are now in the process of departing for the Niger.

"Astronomers on expeditions in Africa
Three Astronomers: Brian Sheen, Geoff Ryder, Mike Dilworth(sic) from the Royal Astronomical Society in the United Kingdom are presently on expedition to Africa for six months.
Brian Sheen, a renowned Cornish Scout Leader and Head of the Roseland Astronomical Observatory, is leading the expedition.
The three are using Sierra Leone as an entry point to River Niger, where they would build a trench canoe to continue their expedition to other African Countries.
The purpose of the expedition is to promote astronomy in Africa. Brian Sheen explained that he is planning to canoe the River Niger in West Africa teaching astronomy along the way – with a paddle in one hand and a telescope in the other.
The adventure, he said, is part of their contribution to the International Year of Astronomy -to celebrate 400 years since Galileo first turned a telescope to the night sky.
The Team yesterday presented lectures on astronomy at the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET) Congo Cross Campus in Freetown for Students, Scout Groups, and Community Organizations.
The Team would depart the shores of Freetown today for River Niger. "
