G7IZU RRD NEWS #meteorwatch //

Happy New Year!

The major meteor shower of the first quarter of 2010 is the Quadrantids. This is typically a short, sharp shower, lasting just a few hours. In 2010 the maximum is estimated to occur on Jan 3rd between at 19h UT, with a possible strong peak occurring between 12h and 16h UT. With the peak occurring during daylight in Europe, and the moon interfering visually, radio observation will be the best way to follow this shower.

Meteor conditions will then stay quiet until approximately the third week in April. A summary of expected activity by the IMO's Alistair McBeath can be downloaded in PDF format here: http://www.imo.net/docs/cal2010.pdf. The IMO meteor homepage can be found here: http://www.imo.net/news/outlook, and the SPA Meteor Section is here: http://www.popastro.com/sections/meteor.htm.

The automation of the email alert system remains suspended in order to reduce the number of false alerts. Manual alerts will be sent out as required.

The meteor alert system is living on borrowed time, now, as I'm sure you're well aware. The European VHF analogue TV transmitters, upon which the system relies, have been closing down left, right and center. The options for signal sources have come down from about six at the beginning of 2009, to around two (in Portugal) right now. Other observers may have more transmitters to choose from - my choices are limited by my location, local obstructions and local radio interference.

UPCOMING METEOR SHOWERS

Peak dates/times/ZHR

QUADRANTIDS (QUA)

2010-01-01 to 2010-01-10

Peak 2010-01-03 12h to 16h UT and 19h UT

Predictions are from the IMO Meteor Shower Outlook and Calendar.

Stunning Spiral Light Show over Norway

Space Weather News for Dec. 9, 2009

This morning in arctic Norway, onlookers were stunned when a gigantic luminous spiral formed in the northern sky.  Veteran observers accustomed to the appearance of Northern Lights say they have never seen anything like it.   It was neither a meteor nor any known form of atmospheric optics.  Rumors that the spiral was caused by the botched launch of a Russian rocket have not yet been confirmed.
